What is Hospice?
Hospice is a positive, empowering form of care designed to provide comfort and support to patients and their families when a life-limiting illness no longer responds to cure-oriented treatments. The goal of hospice is to neither prolong life nor hasten death, but to help patients live as dignified and pain-free as possible. Hospice care is provided by a team of specially trained professionals, including physicians, nurses, social workers, and spiritual counselors, as well as volunteers and family members. Care can be provided in a variety of living situations, including at home, the hospital, a nursing home or an assisted living facility. Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance carriers cover the cost of hospice care and related medications and medical supplies.
Why choose Hospice?
At Willowbrook Hospice we understand that the decision to choose hospice is a difficult one. Some may consider hospice to be a decision to give up; however, we believe hospice is really a decision to make the most of time remaining. Many families who have received hospice services wish that they had taken advantage of hospice sooner. Although hospice is intended for patients with six months or less to live, many patients receive only a few days of hospice and are unable to take full advantage of the peace and comfort that comes with hospice services.
The benefits of hospice care include:
- Give your loved one the opportunity to make the most of their remaining time
- Ensure your loved one is peaceful and comfortable
- Improve your loved one’s alertness and interaction with friends and family
- Receive one-on-one attention from hospice clinicians and physicians
- Support from specially trained volunteers
- Emotional, social, and spiritual counseling services
- Bereavement counseling and support for surviving family members
Patients who may benefit from hospice include patients with terminal cancer, patients in the end stages of Heart Disease, Lung Disease, Kidney Disease, Stroke, Alzheimer’s, Dementia, HIV/AIDs, ALS, and patients with a general failure to thrive.
